The South Aisle roof of this North Devon church had been a victim of leaking gutters for many years, resulting in a great deal of rot to the roof timbers concealed behind the barrel-vaulted ceiling.

Working closely with St Cuthbert Builders, Peter Ayley determined the method of work to repair the sixty three trusses by dismantling and repair or replacement of individual oak components.

This required splicing new oak onto the ends of the existing members in a workshop. Making templates and setting out prior to the repair work was critical as over time the walls had moved in both plan and section.
